it comes to iran, i don't think the election changes things that much. essentially this is an american-led problem. and as much as netanyahu threatens force, i think he will take the lead from president obama who has made it clear he's not going to allow iran to get nuclear weapons. the problem here is the clock is ticking as the president has said himself. and the iranians are playing around with the venue for negotiations, the timing of negotiations. and we're already heading for february without any negotiations. we thought there was going to be negotiations immediately after the president's re-election in november. and basically they've been playing around since then. meanwhile, they continue to enrich, they continue to enrich at 20% iron enriched uranium. and they put themselves closer and closer to the threshold of a nuclear weapons capability. so 2013 is going to become a critical year of decision not so much for netanyahu but barack obama on this issue. the supreme leader under the pressure of sanctions will decide to accept meaningful curbs on his nuclear program, or the presi

years, we have been talking about american exceptionalism, the idea that this country is better. as republicans, we have criticized president obama for not agreeing in -- believing in an increase in this. not only american exceptionalism, but we also define it. during the inauguration, i heard a lot of commentators talk about a peaceful transfer of power that we have got in this country. even as we must never take for granted the peaceful transition we have, america is not great because of the design of our government. america is not exceptional because of that. the genius of america is in our strength and power in growth that comes from individual actions. , a trillion dollar tax hike took effect. the senate voted to prevent tax hikes and 98% of americans. and made the lower tax hikes permanent. president obama got less revenue than the speaker offered in the first place. in short, there is no way we were going to get a better deal for the american tax payer. we wanted to keep tax hikes low for everybody. we wanted to cut spending. otherwise every single taxpayer would have paid higher taxes and our economy would have gotten into a nosedive. the decision was simple. if you think a bill needs to pass, you vote for it. many of my colleagues voted the other way. i respect their decision. prudence demands mutual understanding, especially among friends. my colleagues and i saw the same thing. we wanted a smaller, smarter government. we simply differed on the means. that is the difficulty of governing. it should not be a cause for division. our tactics will differ from issue to issue, but our strategy remains the same. in the next four years, opportunity will not come easily. we have to pay our bills and make sure we can pay our bills tomorrow. to do

american who pays taxes, and i think president obama was perfectly fine, he was serene to go off that cliff. why? because his substantive agenda, which he doesn't hide from, is to dramatically expand the size and power of government, and to do that, he needs to raise taxes. two major points are coming up. the continuing resolution and the debt ceiling. both of those are coming up in the next couple of months. those are leverage points that are the mirror image of the fiscal cliff. those are leverage points that if nothing passes the result is not a default on the debt. that's scaremongering from the president. those are temporary partial shutdowns. we've seen that before in 1995 when republicans stood together, and the result was some political pain, to be sure, but it was also year after year of balanced budgets and some of 9 most fiscally responsible policies from congress we have seen in modern times. \[applause] the only hope of getting anything affirmative done is requesting to come from those leverage points because president obama has indicated, sadly, he has no interest in being bil

but it is. it stuns me that around half of the american population completely fell for this empty mantra of hope and change. the obama administration was going to be that transcendent administration that brought us all together. that is why barack obama earns the white house because he said he was going to be the great uniter. remember the beautiful inaugural address is glorious where he said to conservatives, i want to listen to you, especially when we disagree. nice coming beautiful idea. he was going to meet with conservatives in congress once a week. i was a great idea. he met twice. so three days after the speech, conservatives in congress came and had a meeting and eric cantor reticulated conservative to run increasing taxes. that we shouldn't do that. you know what obama said three days after? he said eric, i want, you must come i trump you on that. a week later he said i want the folks who got us into this mess to do a whole lot less talking and a lot more listening. you can talk a little, but he wants you to stand beside mine so we cleaned this up for you. unbelievable, condesce
